Roadside assistance FAQs

Getting roadside help

I'm stranded near Fort Worth. What should I send when I request help?

Send your location pin or street address, vehicle year, make and model, and a short description of the problem. On a highway, include the road name, direction of travel and nearest exit or mile marker. Tell Jay's if you are in a traffic lane or another unsafe location before discussing the service.

My car stopped in a traffic lane. Should I wait for roadside service?

Immediate danger takes priority over a routine service request. Turn on your hazard lights if you can do so safely and call 911 if you are exposed to traffic or there is a collision, fire or medical emergency. Do not stand in the roadway or attempt a roadside repair in an active lane.

I'm in a parking garage or behind a locked gate. Can I still request help?

Yes, but describe the access restrictions before the visit is confirmed. Send the garage level, clearance limit, parking-space location and any gate or security instructions. A tire or battery job also needs enough safe working space; access may affect whether the job can be done there.

Will submitting the quote form automatically send someone to my car?

No. The quote form prepares a text or email draft for you to send yourself. A visit is not confirmed until you have contacted Jay's and agreed on the service, location and price. For help now, use the Call or Text option.

What should I confirm before approving roadside service?

Confirm the service being provided, the total quoted price, what parts or materials are included and whether your location is safe to work at. Explain any missing spare, wheel-lock key or vehicle-access issue first so the quote matches the actual job.

Jump starts

My car clicks but won't start. Do I need a jump?

A weak battery is one possible cause, but loose connections or a starter fault can also cause clicking. Tell us whether the lights work and whether the engine cranks; a battery and charging-system check helps identify the problem.

What if my car won't stay running after a jump?

The battery may not be holding charge or the charging system may have a fault. Don't assume another jump will solve it. Ask the technician about testing and the safest next step.

Can you jump-start a hybrid or electric vehicle?

Some vehicles have a separate low-voltage battery that can be assisted using the manufacturer's procedure. This is not a high-voltage traction-battery service. Share your exact year, make and model before requesting help.

I left my lights on overnight. Is a jump start enough?

A jump may restart the car if the low-voltage battery was discharged by the lights, but it does not establish that the battery is healthy. Tell the technician what was left on and whether this has happened before. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's guidance for recharging and have repeated no-starts checked.

My battery is swollen, leaking or smells unusual. Should I try a jump?

No. Do not connect jumper cables to a visibly damaged, leaking or swollen battery. Avoid touching leaked material, keep sparks and flames away, and describe the damage when requesting help. A technician needs to assess the safest next step.

Car lockouts

What should I do if a child or pet is locked inside?

If there is heat exposure, breathing difficulty or immediate danger, call 911 first. Do not wait for a routine roadside unlock.

What information is needed to unlock my car?

Share your location and vehicle year, make and model. Have photo ID and proof you are authorized to access the vehicle; let dispatch know if your documents are locked inside.

Does an unlock service replace a lost key?

Unlocking a door is different from cutting or programming a key. Explain whether the keys are inside, missing or broken so dispatch can confirm what service is available.

My key fob stopped working, but I have it with me. Is the car actually locked out?

Check your owner's manual for a mechanical key inside the fob and the manufacturer's emergency door-entry procedure. Do not force a cover or lock. Tell Jay's that you still have the fob so the request can be assessed as an access problem rather than a missing-key job.

My keys are in the trunk. Will opening a door let me get them?

Not always. Some vehicles keep the trunk locked when the doors are opened or disable the interior trunk release. Share the year, make and model and say the keys are in the trunk before approving an unlock; trunk access needs to be confirmed for your vehicle.

Flat tire changes

Do I need a spare tire for a tire change?

A roadside tire change usually installs your usable spare. Tell us if you have no spare or if it is flat; mobile tire replacement may be an alternative, subject to tire availability.

What should I have ready for a tire change?

Provide your location, vehicle details and whether the spare is usable. Find the wheel-lock key if the vehicle has locking lug nuts. The technician needs a safe, stable place to work.

Can I keep driving on a temporary spare?

Follow the speed and distance limits printed on the spare and in your owner's manual. A temporary spare is not a permanent repair; arrange repair or replacement of the damaged tire.

I have locking lug nuts but cannot find the key. Can you change the tire?

A missing wheel-lock key can prevent a normal spare installation. Check the glove box, center console and spare-tire tools, then tell Jay's if the key is missing. Do not assume the lock can be removed during a standard tire change; confirm the available options first.

Can I drive a flat tire to the next exit?

Do not continue normal driving on a flat tire. Driving without adequate air can damage the tire and wheel and affect control. Immediate traffic danger comes first: contact emergency services if you cannot reach safety, and explain your exact position when requesting roadside assistance.

Mobile tire replacement

How do I request the correct replacement tire?

Send the full tire size from the sidewall, such as 225/65R17, along with your vehicle details and location. A clear photo can help. Confirm stock, price and installation availability before approving the job.

Can a tire with sidewall damage be repaired?

A sidewall cut, bulge or exposed cords normally requires replacement rather than a patch. Avoid driving on it and ask a technician to assess the tire.

Can you replace a tire at home or work?

Share the address and parking conditions. Installation needs safe, level working space and access to the vehicle; dispatch will confirm whether the location and tire can be accommodated.

My car has no spare and the tire is shredded. What information helps?

Request a replacement assessment rather than a spare-tire change. Send the full tire size, vehicle details, location and a photo of the damaged tire if it is safe to take one. Tire stock, fitment and safe installation access must be confirmed before a visit is agreed.

Does an electric vehicle need a special replacement tire?

The replacement must meet the vehicle's specified tire size, load rating and other manufacturer requirements. Some electric vehicles also need specific lifting procedures. Provide the exact model and tire-sidewall details; do not choose a tire based on diameter alone.

Battery replacement

How do I know if I need a battery instead of a jump?

Repeated no-starts can indicate a failing battery, but charging-system problems can look similar. Testing helps determine whether replacing the battery is appropriate.

How do you select the correct battery?

Provide the vehicle year, make, model and engine if known. Battery fit, capacity and technology must match the vehicle; some vehicles also require registration or special procedures. Confirm compatibility before installation.

Is a hybrid traction battery included in this service?

A low-voltage starting/accessory battery and a high-voltage hybrid traction battery are different systems. Tell dispatch which battery is involved; do not assume roadside battery replacement includes high-voltage work.

My car needed another jump the next morning. Should I replace the battery?

Have the battery and charging system checked before deciding. An aging battery, a charging fault or an electrical drain can all cause repeat no-starts. Tell the technician how recently the car was jumped and whether warning lights appeared; a replacement battery will not fix every cause.

Can you replace my battery if the car is parked nose-in against a wall?

Describe the parking position and where the battery is located before confirming service. The technician needs safe access to the battery and room to work. Do not push or move a disabled vehicle into traffic to create access; discuss the parking restrictions first.

Tire punctures and repairs

There's a nail in my tire, but it still holds air. Should I pull it out?

Leave it in place until a tire professional can inspect the tire. Removing the object can release air more quickly. Check for pressure loss only from a safe location and arrange an inspection; an embedded nail does not establish that the tire is safe to keep driving on.

Can a puncture near the sidewall be patched?

A puncture in the sidewall or shoulder is not within the recommended repair area. U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association guidance limits repairs to qualifying tread-area injuries no larger than 1/4 inch (6 mm), with the tire removed for inspection. The tire's condition and manufacturer restrictions still determine whether repair is appropriate.

I drove on the flat before stopping. Is the tire still repairable?

Possibly not, even if the puncture looks small. Driving with insufficient air can damage parts of the tire that are not visible from outside. Tell the technician that you drove on it; an internal inspection is needed before a safe repair decision.

Is a plug from the outside a permanent tire repair?

A plug alone is not the repair recommended by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association. Its guidance calls for removing and inspecting the tire, filling the puncture channel and sealing the inner liner with a patch. Ask what repair method is appropriate for the tire before agreeing to the work.

Running out of fuel

I ran out of gas. What should I tell Jay's when I call?

Give your exact location, vehicle details and the fuel type required by the vehicle. Say whether you are safely parked or exposed to traffic. Confirm fuel availability, the amount included and the total quote before approving the visit; never assume gasoline and diesel are interchangeable.

I may have put the wrong fuel in my car. Will adding the right fuel fix it?

Do not start the engine if you suspect the wrong fuel was added. Adding more fuel is not a reliable remedy for contamination. Explain exactly what was added and whether the engine has run; specialist draining or other assistance may be necessary instead of routine fuel delivery.

My electric vehicle ran out of driving range. Is that a jump-start request?

No. A depleted high-voltage traction battery is different from a discharged low-voltage accessory battery. A routine jump start does not recharge the driving battery. Share the model, warning messages and location so the right next step can be discussed; do not assume mobile charging is available.
